ATTRACTIONS OF SOPOT

The promenade, famous all over Poland, called after the Monte Cassino war heros, is closed to car traffic, and runs straight to the pier. On both sides you can admire picturesque apartment houses, visit boutiques, pubs and cafes. In summer, “Monciak” turns into a colorful 600-meter river of tourists. This is one of the most characteristic places in Sopot, the heart of the city, and thus – the main meeting spot.

The longest wooden pier in Europe cuts into the sea at a length of over 511 m. It is a place for recreational and health-related walks (the concentration of iodine on the parts protruding into the sea is twice as high as on land). At the end of the pier there is a yacht marina, which task is also to protect the pier against the destructive effects of waves and wind. The marina is a place of prestigious regattas and a sailing training center for children. In winter, an ice rink is open at the Spa Square at the base of the pier.

One of the most interesting examples of bold contemporary architecture. This building, referring to the drawings of Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg, a Swedish cartoonist who has lived in Sopot for many years, is almost a symbol of the city. Since its inception in 2004, it is one of the most photographed objects in the resort.

The first Spa House with a ballroom was built in 1824. The ballrooms and restaurant rooms were connected with the hotel and the casino. During the war in 1945, the Spa House was almost completely destroyed. The current building was put into operation in 2009. It houses, among others: the State Art Gallery, Tourist Information, Saline Water Pump Room, restaurants, cafes and galleries.

In 1975, the boiler room of the Rheumatology Hospital was modernized, and the smoking chimney was enclosed and a light source was placed on it. Initially, the range was 5 NM (over 9 km). The tower obtained the full status of a lighthouse in 1977, when the range of the light was extended to 31.5 km. Currently, the light reaches up to 13 km and the object is not officially classified as a lighthouse anymore. The height of the tower is 30 m.

A place of international horse competitions and a recreation center for residents and visitors. An excellent track and a picturesque location – the vicinity of wooded moraine hills and the Bay of Gdańsk – place Sopot’s Hippodrome among the top sports facilities of this type. The stands are so located that it is the only equestrian facility in the world with a sea view. Sopot Hippodrome is hosting the Official International Show Jumping Competition CSIO *****, racing and many other events, not only equestrian.

It flows by itself from a depth of 800 m from Zdrój św. Wojciecha (Adalbert of Prague Spring) in Sopot.  It is 4.4 percent. bromide and iodide brine, also containing large amounts of potassium, magnesium and iodine. Diluted twenty times, it is available to the public in the Saline Water Pump Room, located in the new Spa House on the third floor. And in the beautifully restored, resort South Park, picturesque fountains, from which the Sopot brine flows, await walkers. It can be used for inhalation in chronic inflammatory and allergic diseases of the respiratory tract.

It is located in the historic Villa Claaszena from 1904. The representative rooms on the ground floor with the old furnishings have been recreated according to archival photographs from the beginning of the 20th century. Currently, they are open to the public as a permanent exhibition of historic bourgeois interiors. There are variable exhibition halls on the first floor of the villa. Each year, the museum presents temporary exhibitions devoted to various aspects of the history of Sopot.

The remains of a fortified settlement existing from the 8th to the 10th century. The settlement, surrounded by streams, is situated on a wooded hill, at the top of which there is a castle courtyard surrounded by earth embankments. In Grodzisko you will find an exhibition and educational pavilion, a mini-museum. Many festivals and educational meetings are organized here, promoting the history and cultural monuments of early-century Pomeranians.
